Muutama ehdotus

Jotkut kannattavat lasten ottamista pois kelvottomilta vanhemmilta riittävän aikaisessa vaiheessa. Varmasti muitakin vaihtoehtoja on esitetty.

Erityisesti aineenopettajien koulutusta on parannettava näiden asioiden suhteen.

Ongelma numero 3: Monet nuoret käyttäytyvät liian huonosti.

Ratkaisuehdotus A: Synnytysvalmennus muutetaan yhden kerran tapaamiseksi.

Ratkaisuehdotus D:. Luodaan yhteiskunta, joka pitää perheen hyvinvoinnin etusijalla.

Aika mahdottomalta vaikuttaa.

Mutta yritettäisiinkö? Onko meillä tahtoa? Jos tahtoa riittää, eiköhän rahoituskin saada järjestymään.

Let go

Today I observed something in an indoor soft play centre as the English say. More than once a parent went down a slide with a toddler. This particular slide has three slides side by side, so three can go at the same time. Some of these parents wanted to protect the child by holding their hand while going down. In all the cases I observed, it ended badly, the child hurting and crying. In all those cases the child would have been better off had the parent let go of the hand at some point.

It made me wonder how many times we do things trying to protect our children, but end up doing more harm than good. This is not to blame to parents who want to protect their children. This is just perhaps to help think in ways one may have not thought.

As parents we do want to protect our children. We don’t want them to experience the hardships and pain we have experienced. It is natural. Just as natural that our children will experience hardships and pain, regardless of what we do.

We want to protect our children from all the bad sites they may come across on the internet. So we might not let them use the internet at all. Or we may set up filters at home computers which prevent many of the bad things showing no matter what you write on the search field. I’m sure many of those things are good. But are we just holding their hands when we should let go? I don’t mean allowing kids to do whatever whenever on a computer, but we need to teach them what to do when they do come across something we would not want them to see.  They will be using other computers besides those at home at some point. We need to teach them what to do and not just prevent them from doing.

We want to protect our children from scary movies and movies that may present not so good things as the norm. We can set guidelines and age limits about what we allow them to watch or don’t allow. It is not a bad thing. But sometimes those setting the limits may think differently than us about what is good and what is not. Or our child may interpret what they see way different than anyone else in the world thought of. Are we just holding the hands till the end? Or should we discuss a movie after the child has seen it? What did the child think of it? Did something bother him or her? How realistic does he or she think it is? What was good in it? What was bad in it?

We want to protect our children from friends who might lead them along paths we would not like them to take. Sometimes it may well be wise to tell them to cut off the friendship or to try help the child gently find other friends. Sometimes our efforts to have a say about their friends may backfire badly, causing our relationship with our child to deteriorate. Are we trying to hold the hand when we should let go? Should we focus more on teaching the child to be strong and independent, so others won’t be able to persuade him or her to do what they don’t want to do? Should we help a child to find out for herself or himself what is good and worth seeking for? To find out what they really do want? Should we help them know how good they are, how much they are worth to us and the world and how precious they are? Should we show them how much they are loved? And then let go of the hand?

The only way a child can take responsibility of herself or himself is by letting go of the hand. There comes a time for that in everything we do with them. For some things it comes earlier than for others, but eventually, to ensure a good, exciting, enjoyable, joyful and safe slide down the life, we have to let go.

Why I chose to be and continue being a stay-at-home mother

I’ve been a stay-at-home mother for almost 10½ years. And I intend to be such for a few more. Luckily even after returning to work I’ll be home at the same time when the kids are home from school. A choice made partly because of the decision to be a stay-at-home mother.

I made the decision to be a stay-at-home mother if I ever had children early on. Maybe I was 7, starting school, or maybe it was when I was 12 and hating myself or maybe it was when I was 14 and making many important decisions in my life. I’m not quite sure. But I do know for surety why I made that decision. I made it, because my mother was home. I made it, because I felt I gained so much because of my mother being home. I enjoyed that she was home. It was important to me.

Now, I define someone being a stay-at-home mother if she is at home and available for the child every day. That the child doesn’t go 5 days a week to day care.  If the mother is able to work and earn money, while the child gets to be at home, great. My mother took care of other people’s children 5 days a week all my childhood at our home. I still consider her a stay-at-home mother, because she was home when I was home. I went to day care for 4 hours 5 times a week when I was 5. My best friend, whom my mother was taking care of at the time, went there. So I also wanted to.  And I was allowed to.

So I chose to be a stay-at-home mother because having one myself was important to me. I also chose it because I saw the kids my mother was taking care of. I saw some of them be attached to my mother more than to their mothers. Some of them were more attached to me. I – a girl – saw their first steps and heard their first words. I helped my mother to potty train them. I saw them learn new skills. I realized if I ever would be a mother, I would want to be the one to experience those moments.

I chose to be a stay-at-home mother because all the things I learned in university about education and child psychology told me it was the best for my children. I chose it because I heard so many professionals, those of psychology especially, to tell us students how if they could choose again, they would choose to be at home with their young children. I heard them exhort us to do so, if we would have/had children. Of course they also said that if it’s not possible, both the children and adults will survive, they can develop and have good relationships and all that. But with their knowledge, they recommended staying at home with the child.

I also chose to be a stay-at-home mother because I am lazy. I know how big investments I need to make to raise happy children. To raise children who know who they are, know how to dream and how to achieve those dreams. I know how relationships take time to grow to their full potential. And I know I’m not perfect. There’s just no way I could have all of that in a short time I have left after working outside home. I’m too lazy to work out how to fit it all. It is so much easier when you have all the 24 hours a day to use.

I chose to continue being a stay-at-home mother because I don’t see my kids being grown up and not needing me yet. I chose to continue it because my kids are so great I really enjoy being with them. Not always of course. But I cannot think of a work I’d always enjoy either. But I don’t want miss any more great moments with them than I really have to.

I can honestly say I have never had a moment of regret. I have never had a moment I wished I was working full time. Sure I have professional ambitions. But I know I can achieve them later. And I know I can work towards them now, staying at home. There is no need to prove anyone that I am “somebody” by doing something else than staying at home with children.  I know who I am and why I am doing what I am doing. That is enough.

Thoughts on the history and flaws of the Mormon Church

I just read a facebook discussion of which I really have no idea why it showed on my page. Only one of the commentators is my friend. But it provoked these thoughts.

The discussion was about our church. From now on I refer to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints as “church”. In the discussion it becomes clear that some who have left the church feel the church hurts those in the church by many different things. Some of the things are distorting history and thus teaching false historical facts or demanding people to be perfect and thus creating a lot of psychological stress and other harmful things.

I’m always willing to discuss whatever, but sometimes those kinds of discussions are fruitless. Because so much of it has to do with the fact that our experiences are very different.

I would compare it to going to school. The studies (PISA etc) has shown that the school system in Finland is one of the very best. No one in Finland would claim that it is perfect though. It is not perfect because it involves people. My experience of school has been very good. I have always enjoyed school. Not everything in it, not every day, but as a whole. It doesn’t mean that I haven’t noticed that some things are wrong or could be better. But school has done me good. I have even pursued a career in teaching.

I know many Finns have had very bad experiences in school. I know many have hated school. I loved my teacher of the first 6 years. I know a friend hated him. Same experience but we experienced it very differently. Why? A lot of it has to do with ourselves. Different things matter to us. Perhaps the teacher treated us differently. It may have been because of him or it may have been because of differences in us. It’s easy for my friend to think that the teacher was bad. It’s easy for those who had bad teachers and bad experiences to think that the Finnish school system is rotten. And it’s understandable. But is it the truth?

We believe the gospel of Jesus Christ is perfect. Meaning if we all would follow His teachings, we and the world would be a much happier and better place. We don’t believe the church as an organization is perfect. God created and led by God yes. But not perfect. Perfect would mean that it never changes. There would be no need for any changes. Of course it changes. There are differences in every country, every congregation and in every decade. The gospel is the same and stays the same. Many things in the church are same and may even stay the same.  But to think that the organization is perfect is silly. As silly as it is to think that it should be perfect if it really was from God.

There are many studies and theories about how cultures develop. How people in general develop. The members of the church as a group of people follow similar paths. It’s natural. Today we abhor many of the ways and thoughts of the antiques. Not to mention other times and cultures. We can’t understand many of the things in the history of human race because we as human beings don’t think and perceive things the same way they did. Different things are important and vital to us than were to them. Thus we can really never understand history. And like a wise history professor says: history is always an interpretation. There aren’t really many historical facts. People’s own accounts are always their interpretations of the facts. The physical facts are (necessarily) interpreted by us, by our current understanding. Can there be a historical truth found, really?

So why haven’t we been taught about all the historical accounts in the church? Perhaps it’s like at school. Three are so many things I could teach my students. So many interesting things, fascinating things and things that most likely would be beneficial things. But I have only limited time for teaching. It means I choose to teach those things I feel are the most important. And for some reason the leaders of the church have felt that the most important things are those that help us become better people.  I encourage students to study at home those things they find interesting. Not all teachers do that. At church I have always been encouraged to study gospel related things. Maybe not all have. But it’s not the fault of the system. It’s about the individuals we have happened to interact with.

Some claim that the leaders of the church have purposely withheld historical information that is opposing  to or disagreeing with something that is taught as “this is how it happened”.  I have understood that their thought is that the information has been withheld because it would make people not believe and leave the church. So it is about power. They want to keep us uninformed so that they can control us. Of course I do not believe so. One reason is because all I have ever heard at church is “study it out yourself”, “don’t believe me, but find out about it yourself”.  Another reason is that religion is a matter of faith. We know that many religions with many dark secrets in their histories still have many people believing. So I think a more probable reason for the historical things not actively shared at church is that perhaps those in charge are in this regard similar to me: knowing the historical stories and the different views and ideas and flaws of the early members of the church doesn’t bother. As a youngster I did come across many of those, because friends had questions – luckily internet was available then. But until I heard for the first time that  some people feel it – the fact that they have not been shared all the historical views -  as the compelling reason to leave the church it never would have occurred to me that it might.

So there are many different stories about different things concerning the beginning of the church as it is today. Accounts written by different people at different times. Some of them are opposite to each other. Some people feel that if this really is from God, God should have told Joseph Smith everything at once so that there would not have been room for people to make very great errors. Some feel that the prophet should have dealt with all issues as we would today with our current understanding – when he lived in a very different world. We know God’s principles are unchangeable. For example, the principle of every person being equal in the eyes of God. So how can there have been inequality in the church?

It takes a lot of courage and other qualities to go against the common views of things. Often times it doesn’t even occur to us that there is anything wrong with the common view or way of doing things. I could name for example quite a few things that are considered normal and even very good in the US,  things common there. Things that in this corner of the world are considered absolutely horrible and against all ethical and moral principles. It’s not easy to understand that something we think as a norm and normal is not really that. Even God can’t force us to understand it immediately out of the blue. It takes time and preparation and our development as a nation to accept such things. God doesn’t often interfere with the natural way things happen. Why? Because we are here to learn, develop and grow. We all know from parenting that we can’t teach a child something until he is ready to learn it. No matter how much we would like him to learn it sooner.

If the church is from God, does it mean all people, especially the leaders should be perfect? Of course not. We all know it’s not possible. And it would be against God’s plan. As we believe, a plan was presented for us to come to earth. Satan wanted to force everyone to do the right so that everyone would be saved and he would get the glory. God wanted us to be able to choose for ourselves. If God would make sure that the church or church leaders would never make mistakes, He would be forcing them to do right. He would be doing what He prevented Satan from doing.

My father keeps telling about a time when he was very new in the church. At the time church was also still quite new here. He had a question about something and some leader gave him an answer. An answer that to me as a younger person having been in the church all my life is just ridiculous. Totally false. An answer that at the time my father felt was not right. But from the point of view of the leader I can see why he gave such an answer, what he meant by it and why he thought it was the truth. The church doesn’t, can’t and shouldn’t exist without the context around it. We all bring in our perspectives, experiences and own ideas. Even the leaders. God won’t come and correct every sentence we say. That would be forcing us to do the right thing again.

I do feel very sorry for those who feel that the members of the church have hurt them, for  various reasons. I’m sure their feeling of hurt is real. I’m sure people actually have done and said hurtful things. I can even believe that there are people who have intentionally hurt though I like to give the benefit of doubt on that for everyone. And of course it shouldn't happen. But we are imperfect, so it happens. But I don’t see how it can be implied that the hurt has been caused because of the church. The gospel teaches us to love everyone. It teaches us to accept everyone. It teaches us to be merciful and forgiving. It teaches us to reach out, not shun. It teaches us to be as good as we can. If a person chooses to hurt someone or shun someone it is not because of the church.

But within the group of members of the church we have different cultures. Every congregation has  a different culture of being and doing. Just like every workplace has. In some cultures you may see more shunning. In some cultures you may see a lot of backbiting and gossiping. In another culture you may see the culture of “you have to be perfect” or the culture of really accepting everyone as they are. Those cultures are not made by the church. Those cultures are created by the people in that group. It happens in every group, not just church groups. If one doesn’t like the culture of the group he belongs to, he can try to change it. If the culture in my classroom is in anyway not desired, I can’t blame the school and the headmaster for it. What I can do, is start working with the people in that group. By showing example to begin with.

The truth is, religion is matter a faith. Either you believe it, no matter the “evidence” or you don’t believe it, no matter the “evidence”. One can’t convince the other person one way or the other. It is a personal choice. And it is a choice. It doesn’t just happen without us doing anything about it. It may be one big choice or a result of small choices in a long period of time. Everyone has the right to make that choice without being ridiculed for whatever choice he has made.

Niinhän sä luulet tietäväsi

On ollut mielenkiintoista seurata maailman menoa koulun ympäristössä viime syksystä lähtien viedessä ja hakiessa eskarilaista.

Muutamia huomioita:

Siksi on äärettömän tärkeää opettaa heille miksi haluamme heidän toimivan tietyllä tavalla.

Silloin on helpompi käydä niitä keskusteluja oikeasti tärkeistä asioista teini-iässä.

Rasismista

Umayya Abu-Hanna on ollut otsikoissa kirjoittamansa jutun johdosta. Siihen on kirjoitettu monenlaisia vastineita ja tänään asiaa on puitu televisiossa

Aihe on tärkeä.

Keskustelussa on hyvä pitää nämä kaksi asiaa erillään.

Näin on tapahtunut historiassa monia kertoja.

Kuinka sitten todellisuudessa voitaisiin vähentää rasismia Suomessa? Yksi tutkimuksista vahvistusta saanut syy rasismille on suhteellisen puutteen tunne.

Keskustelu asiasta on ehkä tällä hetkellä avainasemassa. Opettajilla on jokseenkin valtaa suureen joukkoon ihmisiä. Joten kuinka usein me opettajat käymme syvällistä keskustelua erilaisuudesta ja ihmisen arvosta, ennakkoluuloista ja syrjinnästä? Todellista, oikeaa keskustelua? Se ei tarkoita yhtä oppituntia. Kuinka usein sitä tehdään lukiossa? Ammattikouluissa? Yläkoulussa? Alakoulussa? Päiväkodissa? Tuo keskustelu kuuluu jokaiseen mainitsemaani paikkaan. Otammeko me opettajat oman vastuumme vakavasti?

Kuinka usein näistä asioista todella keskustellaan kotona? Mitä opetan lapsilleni suoraan sanoilla? Mitä lapseni oppii mallioppimisen kautta? Entä välineoppimisen kautta - eli hyväksynkö lapseni syrjivän käyttäytymisen tai paheksunko ei-syrjivää käyttäytymistä? Vahvistanko lapseni syrjivää toimintaa?

Yhteiskunnan täytyy tehdä oma osansa selkeästi syrjivien käytäntöjen poistamiseksi. On hyvä pohtia kuinka elämä tehdään kaikille mahdollisimman tasa-arvoiseksi.

Guns for teachers

What recently happened in Connecticut was heartbreaking. Many aspects of it were heartbreaking. I understand the need to find the guilty ones and the reasons. I also understand that it cannot ever be fully understood nor agreed upon which those were. It is important to discuss what could be done to prevent these kinds of things from happening or how could damage be kept to a minimum if something similar happened.

Having guns in schools is something really impossible to understand from my perspective because I live in a very different environment. I've understood there have been propositions to have teachers carry guns. Perhaps it's reality in some places already.

As a teacher I could not personally handle that. Sure, I would like to be the hero who in a case like this would use the gun to scare the shooter to not do anything. That would be great. That would also be very improbable.

I know killing one for the sake of saving many is kind of heroic or can be considered good. But I could not be the one killing that one. No matter how many lives that would save (and I could never be certain if it did save any lives or not), I would be the one living the rest of my life with the fact that I killed someone.

Yes, I know, I wouldn't have to kill, I could just injure, but I could not know in advance how I would react in a panic situation as such, no matter how well I would have been trained to use the gun. I'm not a soldier. I could not live with it. And I don't think it's fair to ask teachers, who are taught and trained to do things very much opposite of harming someone, to perhaps one day live with such a burden.

There needs to be something else that can be done. And sometimes we also need to accept the fact that there will always be things we can do nothing about, no matter how well prepared we seem to be.

What can I do?

While at the gym I watched a programme about a Norwegian midwife in Israel helping out Palestinian women.

It made me think how extremely blessed I am to live where I do. How my life is so very easy. How everything in my life is good.

But it is devastating to know how many things are wrong in this world. How much suffering is everywhere. How horrible things many has to suffer. Sometimes you hear people saying that every suffering is suffering and everyone experiences things differently, so you can't compare and say that one suffers more. But I don't think that's right. Even if the actual feelings are similar, I am sure everyone would rather suffer for example a loss of a job than a brutal loss of every family member.

I understand one can be happy in very hard conditions. One can be content with almost nothing. Our circumstances don't force us to become bitter or unhappy. But it is so much easier to be happy when life is easier.

Looking at the world is devastating. It feels nothing can be done. Something can often be done to help one individual. And that is good. But can we really change the world? It would be quite easy. Just stop fighting. Give enough for everyone. Look after each other.

Can we change the world as long as there are people who don't care? Can we change the world if those in power don't want to change? As much as I do believe, that one day there will be a time when people live in peace, I do lack faith that as it is, it could happen anytime soon.

But one thing what I can do, is to teach my children. If every mother (and father) could teach tolerance, love, kindness, appreciation, selflessness and caring, perhaps we'd be one generation closer to peace and happiness. Perhaps it is the mandate of all the mothers in the world. Perhaps as mothers together we can bring it to pass.

Jouluajatuksia

Helsingin joulupuukeräys  on tullut tutuksi. Samoin Espoon.

Linkki on yhteystietosivulle.

So unfair!

Today about an 11-year-old boy found a basket ball on a school yard. He read something written on it and shouted "are you xx's". An adult approached and asked, angrily, what are you shouting? What are you doing with the ball, it's our ball? Where did you take it from? Don't you understand that our name is written on it, it's not yours and thus you DO NOT touch it. The poor boy was trying to explain that he found it in a place where it was abandoned, he read the name, called them to inform them that their ball is there to throw it to someone or to have someone come and get it.

I felt horrible for the boy. He was doing a good deed and was scolded for it. I wanted so badly to run after him and tell him he did the right thing and the adult behaved very badly. Unfortunately I was not able to do that. Perhaps I see him again.

Unfortunately it happens too often. Adults think the worst immediately. Parents (I've done it too) accuse a child of doing something they have not done, even without giving them a chance to explain. It happens in day care and school. It happens in public transportation. And wait until the teens start looking for jobs. The attitude towards teens is often plain horrible. Especially if they look a bit different.

I think many women can share the experience of how badly you're treated if you take your car to be serviced or are trying to buy a new car. Multiply that treatment you get from the men with 100 and you may get an idea what it feels to be a teenager or a child.

It is so unfair how we treat them.

Seriously. We keep hearing how disrespectful children and teenagers are nowadays. Is it any wonder? If they're not treated with respect, how would they know how to treat others with respect?

Mormonipresidentti?

Tänään oli mielenkiintoinen? hauska?, no, artikkeli hesarissa.

Presidentti on kuitenkin ensisijaisesti maansa presidentti, jonka tarkoituksena on toimia kansansa parhaaksi.

Galileo Galilei

Olen lukenut mielenkiintoista kirjaa Galileo Galileista. Voin suositella.

Sillä kaikki totuushan on lähtöisin Jumalalta.

For all of those who have a child starting school

or have kids in school for the xth year.

Some advice as a parent and as a teacher.

  • Fear not. If you do, your child most likely become anxious. He will  probably  have no idea why he is anxious, thus projecting the anxiousness and anxiousness about not knowing why he is anxious, to the school.  Which will perhaps cause the exciting beginning of school become more of a terrifying thing.
  • Do not assume. Don't assume that school is what it was when you were there. Don't assume the teacher to be certain kind. Don't assume your child to behave in a certain way or succeed in a certain level. Don't assume, ask, look, find out.
  • Do not believe everything the child says. Do not doubt the child either. Understand that there is no absolute truth but different perceptions. Often both the child and the teacher (or friend) can be right even though their stories are different.
  • Teach the child that the teacher can also make mistakes. Teach that it is also ok for the child to make mistakes.
  • Teach the child to understand that homework is his responsibility. Help him own it. Let him suffer the consequences if he forgets to do them. Also understand that really, once in a while, it really isn't a big deal.
  • Let the child know that you are always available for help when doing homework. Help only when asked. Help - do not do the work for the child, do not tell how the work is supposed to be done. Help the child to find the solutions and right answers. Do not correct the wrong answers. A good way is to ask the child about an incorrect answer: Look at this carefully - does it look right? If written, ask the child to read it out loud. Does it sound correct? How about you calculate that again to see if you get the same answer?
  • Have a positive attitude. Your attitude towards school and your child's teacher is the biggest factor in how well your child will do in school.
  • If you wonder about something, ask the teacher. Ask to understand, not to make your point clear.
  • If something really is wrong, fight. Fight for your child. But not at the expense of other children.
  • Remember that goals are good and important, but goals set by others aren't goals. They are sometimes barriers stopping us from spreading our wings to fly.
  • Do not divide the class into good kids and bad kids.
  • Do not think your child behaves the same at school as at home. Do not think he couldn't do something you never though he could. Don't take accusations at face value either. If you haven't mastered the skill of discussion yet (no one has), it's time to begin practicing.
  • Remember that school is not life even though it helps to prepare for life.
  • Remember that it is much more important to learn to work than to get good grades.
  • Know that the most common answer to how school was, is "ok". And to the question "What did you do" the answer is "I don't remember". Do not worry. It is normal. Even though it looks like there is nothing to discuss, be available for discussion, because those times will come when you listening about school is crucial.
  • Know that the teacher can do only so much. At the end, we as parents really are responsible for our children. Even their learning.
  • Make sure your child knows he can talk to you about everything without being blamed or punished.
  • If a child gets a punishment (or a consequence) for bad behaviour at school, remember that he already had the punishment. No need to punish again at home. A huge need for discussion though.
  • Yes, teachers can be unfair. But try to help the child understand that even though he feels the teacher is unfair it might not be the case. Sometimes the teacher knows more than the pupils and what looks unfair is totally fair all things considered.
  • Let the child have fun and enjoy school.
Any questions about school - feel free to ask - I have opinions. Perhaps not the right ones, but strong ones. :-)

Suomalaisille: on hyvä joskus lukea opetussuunnitelmaa: mitä lapsen pitäisi milloinkin osata ja miten arvosanat muodostuvat. Tosin siinä on opettajakohtaisia eroja hieman.

Peruskoulun opetussuunnitelman perusteet  (uudistusprosessi alkanut)

Koulujen omat opetussuunnitelmat, joissa saattaa olla tarkennuksia ja painotuksia, löytyvät yleensä koulun omilta nettisivuilta.

Voihan itku

Kesän aikana tilanne on muuttunut. Varmasti tilanne on vieläkin suhteellisen hyvä.

On äärimmäisen tärkeää opettaa lapselle, kuinka tehdä päätöksiä. Ääripää kummassa tahansa suunnassa on huono.

Kuinka paljon odotamme ja oletamme lastemme sietävän tilanteita, joita emme itse sietäisi? Kuinka paljon odotamme lastemme antavan periksi, jotta sopu säilyisi? Millaisiksi haluamme lastemme oikeasti kasvavan? Onko toimintamme sen mukaista? Joskus on ihan hyvä pysähtyä pohtimaan.

Gratitude

Lately I have been so grateful for my parents.

I believe we come here on earth as individuals with our unique gifts and strengths and weaknesses. I also believe our experiences with our parents and siblings mold us a lot. Peers may have some part in it too, or may not, depending on individual.  Eventually our own choices determine the way we are headed.

My parents were no where perfect. As a teenager I could point out many things they did wrong. I still think many things could have been done differently. I've also always known they did their best with what knowledge and experience they had.

I've followed some lives around me and realized how big a part my parents really have played in my life. Most of the good things I have I can lead to their teachings and actions. I hope I was able to show enough respect to my mother when she still lived and will be able to show enough respect to my father while he still is with us.

One thing I've learned: No matter how much we want to hold our children responsible for their own actions, and yes, of course, to a point they are, often we miss the fact that really, very much is about what we do or don't do as parents. And we do need to take responsibility for that. Parenting is our responsibility. We are accountable for it.

If I want my child to be a sports hero, I will have to do many things for that to happen. It is obvious. No matter how good at sports he seems to be, things don't just happen naturally. It's not enough to just occassionally go and play around. It will have to be our top priority.

It's exactly same if we want our children to be good people. If we want them to be charitable. Those who love their neighbours and God, when that is what is wanted. Then that has to be our top priority. It doesn't just happen naturally. We need to make choices that will help them become such.

I think the reason I am so grateful for my parents is that their priority was that their children would become good people, loving God. And they did their part. I hope my children can one day feel the same way.

Digging

Son, 9, had  a chance to go do something the parents thought he would enjoy. His first reaction was I don't want to. We were puzzled. How come. His second reaction was I don't want to. His last reaction was I don't want to. No matter how much discussion, digging out reasons, he could not tell why not.

I could see there are many emotions involved. Most likely there isn't just one reason but many. Based of his previous experiences I could think quite a few that might be reasons. But he wouldn't fully agree on any of them. Some were perhaps, perhaps not, perhaps a little bit. He was quite agitated by not really knowing himself why, but feeling very strongly about it.

Finally we stopped digging, boy and me. Never got to the bottom. Perhaps one day he'll know why. But I hope he got a feeling that it is important to try to understand why we do things and why we don't. Why we want to do something and why we don't. Why we feel the way we do.

There are many things in life that prevent us from doing things we might enjoy or might be good for us. Often it's fear, perhaps based on previous experiences, sometimes it's wrong images of ourselves and our capacities. To live a full and satisfactory life it is important to try figure out those things that prevent us from thriving. And then do something about them.

Nuo kaksi kuudesluokkalaista poikaa olivat menneet koulun pihalla keskeyttämään kahden nuoremman oppilaan tappelun, tappelun, jossa olisi voinut käydä melkoisen huonosti. Tuli hyvä mieli, että rehtori huomioi.

Facebookista löytyy tarina siitä, kuinka yhden lapsen ystävällinen teko oli estänyt kiusatun lapsen itsemurhan. Auttaja sai oman tekonsa merkityksestä tietää vasta vuosien jälkeen. Itselläni on samankaltainen kokemus. Pienillä teoilla on suuria merkityksiä.

Christina Salmivalli on tutkinut paljon koulukiusaamista Suomessa. Moni muukin on tutkinut asiaa.

Kiusaaminen on monimutkainen juttu. Ehkä kuitenkin kiusaaminen on mahdollista saada kitkettyä. Ainakin kannattaa yrittää!

Why I love being a mother

I always took it for granted that one day I will be a mother. Of course I knew it might not happen, but still that wasn’t really an option. As a teenager, for some odd reason people had a habit of asking how many kids do you want when you grow up. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one asked about it. I always answered 16 – knowing it wouldn’t really even be possible. (I know, it is but you know, not really). That was even mentioned in the graduation yearbook.
I thought I’ll be a great mother. I’ll enjoy being a mother. I’ll love my kids to the bits. If nothing else, I’ll be a better mother than mine.
I think I was pretty well equipped for mothering. I grew up my mother taking care of other people’s kids at our home, so I was watching, learning and doing a lot. I did plenty of babysitting. I got a master’s degree in educational science, where child development and development psychology are mandatory. I taught in school, younger kids and older kids. I was ready – I thought.
The truth is, you’re never ready to be a mother.  Ready means you really are equipped to handle every single thing that comes along. You know how to deal with everything, you have answers for everything, you understand yourself perfectly and you can master your emotions and actions.
Motherhood is not a condition that just happens to you when you give birth or adopt. It is not a task to perform. It is not  an achievement to brag about or to use as a weapon against others. Motherhood is an adventure that will never end. It is immersion in love and despair. Motherhood is closing some doors to be able to open others.  Motherhood is life at its best.
While I’ve been a mother I’ve realized I can be a great mother, but it doesn’t really matter. Mothering isn’t about me. What matters is that my children are great. They are awesome. And it’s not because of me but because of who they are when they are born.  At times I enjoy being a mother, at times I realize how much easier life would be if I weren’t.  I do love my children, but it’s not about the feeling, it’s about the actions. The greatest moments are when you dislike and love at the same time. During these 10 years I’ve  learned that I probably will never beat my mother in comparison. But I’ve also learned there’s no need to.
The reason why I love being a mother is my four children. They see me at my worst. Yet they trust me, love me and tell me “you are the best mommy in the world” every night. It’s hard to find a job where you’d hear that on a daily basis.
Happy mothers’ day, whenever you (have) celebrate(d) it.

Expecting the worse

Our son, almost 4, tumbles over a lot. It is due to his condition and doesn't differ depending on where he is. But on a playground or  any play area where he doesn't walk long distances, people don't often recognize anything weird about his walking or moving.

What often happens is that he falls next to another child. Sometimes it can look pretty bad, him landing on his face. The parent of the other child comes and asks or commmands their child to say sorry. Sometimes with an angry voice. Sometimes really reprimanding their child. And I feel so bad. Often the situation goes on so quickly or I'm too far away to explain that it really wasn't any fault of their child. The child probably didn't even touch mine or see him being near.

I'm all for teaching the child to say sorry when needed. But it seems that too often we focus on that instead of seeing what really happened or listening to the child who tries to explain he hasn't done anything to say sorry for. Why are we so quick to find fault in our children? Or are we just too worried about acting as a good parent that we don't care about the truth?

Dilemma

My two girls (7 and 6) want to sew their own dresses. At this point the paper pattern has been cut. Now I'm a bit indecisive. Should I let them make all the possible mistakes and learn (perhaps to never ever try again) or should I let them do only those things I know they either can or I know the mistakes wont be impossible to correct?

We've done some dresses before. I did the cutting and steering while the child pushed the pedal on the sewing machine. But at the time our designs weren't as elaborate as now. I'm leaning towards cutting the fabric and having them put the pins and doing the sewing the same way as before. I admit, I'm a bit scared of them sewing their fingers if I let them do it all alone.

The trouble is, my kids are a lot like me. The older girl especially. Like me golfing. Or sewing. Or doing any other thing. Even when I know how badly I do it, I want to do it my way. I'm not good at listening to "let me show how it's done". And when I do badly, I get upset. And then easily give up. (I'm not a perfectionist, when I say badly I really mean badly, not oops, the straight line is not straight for one centimetre.

I really hope we all can enjoy this sewing experience. And perhaps even create something wearable.

No right answer

I've followed an interesting discussion about minor sex offenders in US. I understand systems are very different in many ways and is for sure one reason why some things are hard to understand from my perspective.

In US a minor sex offender, after therapist etc evaluation, can be allowed to go to a normal school. It means that perhaps the head master is informed about the situation and some precausions are taken, but not all the teachers and definately not the students and parents know what the new kid has done - or perhaps in some cases allegedly done.

Sexual offense is always serious. It's always horrible. We have way too low and small consequences for rape. It's never right.

The debate is about should or should not everyone be notified what a minor offender has done. I understand people want to know to protect their children. They want to say: Never go near this boy, never speak to him, shout if he tries to contact you... (of course it could be a girl, but talking about a boy here, because they seem to be the majority). But then, shouldn't the principles of causiousness be taught anyway, regarding anyone. How plausible it really is that something horrible happens at school by a fellowstudent? If the child has had horrible experiences himself, which has caused him to do something horrible, there still is hope that he can heal, he can be "healed". If he's done something once, it doesn't automatically mean he's going to it again. But if everyone knows and he knows everyone knows, he doesn't really have any other choice than to be what everyone thinks he is. It's more likely he'll do something wrong again, either to others or to himself. I think everyone deserves a chance. Even when it may be risky.

Note - I am talking about minors, I don't think all the same principles apply to adults - I wouldn't allow an adult sex offender work in a school.

We do need to protect our children. But at the same time, all children need protection, from different things. All children are as valuable - even when they do horrible things. Usually it really isn't because they are evil but because evil things have happened to them.

And unfortunately there are false accusations and minor offenses (don't know about them legally, but I can see something that would here cause only a raising of an eyebrow to be considered as rather horrible in the US) that really can ruin a child's life when there really isn't a need for it.

If something bad happens to my children, it would be horrible. It would be hard to get over it. I would think really hard if I didn't do my job as a parent well enough. If I'm partly at fault. But bad things happen in this world. One can get over those with professional help. As horrible as it would be, I couldn't still allow myself to say that everyone in the school needs to know the new kid is a sex offender. Or that the parents need to know that some kid in the school is a sex offender. Whether it was a serious offense or a minor offense or a false accusation.

Selityksen makua

Eilen taas havahduin.

Tottahan sekin on.

Perfection

I know people who call themselves perfectionists. I'm not one of them. I know we all should strive for perfection - to be as good human beings as possible, in a philosophical or religious sense. I do strive for it but don't get too down when I fail - which I do all the time.

I think perfection may have gotten too big of a role in our societies. I know, perfection is nice. Who wouldn't want to look perfect, have a perfect house, have a perfect job, have perfect children and of course, have a perfect spouse... Perfect life would be wonderful. But at what cost should we strive for perfection.

I confess, I'm too lazy to do many things I could and probably should. I don't want to pay the prize, whether it's real money or something else.

I think it used to be more that it was the famous celebrities who tried to be so very perfect. At least on areas which are seen. I'm sure there has always been mothers who have perfected the art of needlework or household chores. I'm sure there's also been plenty of those who have done their best and thought it perfect because they really haven't had a chance to compare.

Now we have the internet full of examples of perfect lives or certain areas of lives. If nothing else there are blogs about perfect looking homes, perfect looking mothers, perfect looking children, sometimes even perfect looking husbands. All of those even often in one and same blog. Then we have blogs of perfect nature friendly living people, perfect child rearers, perfect cooks, perfect skinny cake makers... Not to mention all the tv shows about perfect lives.

Does anyone anymore settle for average, ok or I can live with this? I know everyone knows those blog keepers' lives really aren't perfect - right? We may tell that to ourselves to make us feel better, but still there might be a nagging feeling, that perhaps their life really is perfect. Perhaps it's something that so many people have attained, but not me. Perhaps there's something very wrong with me...

Just read an article written by a mother who's son committed a suicide at the age of 26. Everyone thought he had a good life. Perhaps many even thought it was perfect. There's about 1000 people in Finland per year, of whom is known for sure that they've committed suicide. That's about 1000 too many. I know there are so many reasons for it, it's never black and white. But I have a feeling that this kind of strive for perfection, as individuals in this society, isn't something that will help the number to decrease. Our strive for perfection in being a better person would. Because then we would notice each individual, care and act. Hopefully before it's too late.

Today's observations

As background, no news to those of you who know me, I'm the "sit still and behave" -type. At home kids may do all sorts, but even then I try to keep their voices low. Running is fine, shouting is not.

Today daughter started an art course at school. 10 times every Friday for 10 kids, taught by a real artist. Absolutely fantastic. (I hope. Was a bit disappointed that today's task was self portrait. In any way you like. Like it's the first thing kids do in preschool, school etc, so many times...) We had been told to wait on a certain area in the school building. Someone would come and get the kids and we adults there could ask questions. The area is situated "in between" - between the building with classrooms and the building with gym and dining area. There were 4 firstgraders- all girls -, three older girls and three thirdgrade boys. We all waited for some 10 minutes (who gets there right in time?). The boys were fooling around a bit, not running, not shouting. The vice headmistress comes and tells the boys to behave. Suggests (trying to command) the boys to go outside and wait. Soon comes the person to pick up the little artists and she tells that from now on they'll all have to wait outside.

What?  I'm fine with waiting outside. No problem with that. But I do have a problem that basically the boys were told that they are behaving badly, when in my opinion they weren't. Like said, my criteria is quite strict. They were being kids and being "punished" for it.

First, I think it's great they had the gut to come to an art class. It can be seen as a not boyish thing to do. They should be complimented for that, not told that if they don't behave they'll be kicked out - before nothing's really happened - and perhaps just because they're boys.

Second, no wonder kids are fat and don't exercise enough if even the slightest movement is considered bad and they're told to sit still and wait. After a school day. In a place where it cannot be a problem for anyone. Seriously.

I did voice my opinion, unfortunately wasn't quick enough to do it to the vice headmistress. I got this very broad explanation - as if I'd been the mother of the boys, though the lady knew I weren't. Had to explain that I am a teacher and still think the way I do.

Really, it's not easy to be a boy. Especially in school.

4. Olen pelannut jalkapalloa ja harrastanut telinevoimistelua.
5. Pidän puissa kiipeilystä.
6. Joskus tunnen sietämätöntä halua tehdä jotakin tyhmää, kuten piirtää jonossa edessä olevan ihmisen takkiin tussilla.
7. Rakastan jalapenoja.

No niin, tunnettepa nyt tätä blogistia hieman enemmän :-)

Thinking

This week our neighbours had a mother with two young children visiting them for a few days. The father of the family had just died in a car crash. A friend of a relative, man in his 40's, very healthy, in very good shape (quite well known athlete) had a heart attack just last week. He returned from skiing (cross country), said bye to his wife who left. She returned in a few moments to pick up something forgotten and found him lying on a floor. He has recovered -to a state of about a 10-year-old. Today I was driving and saw a man lying on the road next to his car, two people giving him CPR and an ambulance coming to rescue him.

Something can happen any time. We cannot live in a fear of something happening. But at times I really wish I'd realize how it all really can end any moment. It should affect how I treat people, especially my family. If these were the last words my kids hear from me, how would I feel? How would they feel? If I'd die today, would my children and spouse really know how much I love them and how important they are to me? If one in my family would die, would I be full of regrets or could I mourn peacefully?

Sometimes you just need to stop and think. What really matters? What really is important in this life?

sunnuntai 19. helmikuuta 2012

Be quiet

When the child feels everyone is always accusing her, what do you do? When she sees and hears accusation and dislike in every word and tone? When she thinks she's not as good as others? Or doesn't get a fair treatment? When she just screams and shouts to others, because they don't do what she wants? When she thinks that no one likes to play with her? When she says she knows you love her, more than you can express, as much as every other child in the family, but she doesn't feel that? At least not at the moment.

Those moments I find really hard. Usually they come right after or at the time you've gone beyond the normal to do something extra special. When you think that now no one can complain, now I've been the perfect mum for a moment. You've thought you've succeeded for one small moment, and it all comes crumbling down. It's very hard not to behave the same way. Exclaim how no one in the family cares about me or what I try to do. How I'm not appreciated one bit. How I'm such a failure, a horrible mum.

We're still all learning. Often the only way a child can learn, is by example. Words aren't enough, though important. I'm trying to learn to be quiet when needed.
